Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Your 3 Days Midrange Gorilla Trek adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kigali (or Entebbe/Kampala), depending on your preferred starting point. If starting from Kigali, the scenic drive will take about 4-5 hours, offering you beautiful views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, terraced farmlands, and lush landscapes. As you approach the border, you’ll cross into Uganda via the Cyanika or Katuna border posts. The border crossing is smooth, and you’ll quickly transition into Uganda’s striking landscapes of dense rainforests and dramatic hills.

If you’re starting from Kampala, the journey is slightly longer, taking approximately 8-9 hours. En route, you’ll have the chance to stop at the Uganda Equator for photos, and enjoy a leisurely lunch in Mbarara. As you continue your drive, you’ll pass through beautiful landscapes, including savannahs and the rolling hills that lead you into the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Upon arrival at the park, you will check in to your selected lodge. Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Bwindi

Today is the day you’ve been waiting for — your gorilla trek! After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park headquarters for a briefing on what to expect during the trek. The park ranger will explain important safety protocols, appropriate behavior around gorillas, and the trekking process itself. You will also be allocated to a specific gorilla family to visit, based on your physical ability and preference.

The trek through the dense forest can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located on the day of your trek. Be prepared for a moderately strenuous hike, as the terrain can be steep and muddy. However, your knowledgeable guide will be with you every step of the way, ensuring your safety while pointing out the fascinating flora and fauna of the forest. As you move through the jungle, the anticipation builds, and when you finally encounter the gorilla family, all the effort is worth it.

The encounter with the mountain gorillas is one of the most incredible wildlife experiences in the world. For an hour, you will be allowed to observe the gorillas in their natural habitat. Watch as the silverback leads his family, while younger gorillas play and frolic around. The chance to observe them up close, in the wild, is an emotional and awe-inspiring experience. Once the hour is over, you will retrace your steps back to the trailhead. After returning to your lodge, you can relax and share your experience with fellow travelers. In the evening, you may choose to enjoy a cultural activity, such as a visit to a local Batwa village or browse local handicrafts to take home as souvenirs.

Day 3: Return Journey to Kigali or Kampala

On the final day of your safari, after breakfast, you’ll check out from your lodge and begin your return journey to Kigali or Kampala/Entebbe. If you are traveling back to Kigali, the drive takes around 4-5 hours. You can choose to take a brief tour of Kigali after arriving, perhaps visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you can learn about Rwanda’s history, or explore the local markets and shops for a taste of the vibrant city.

For those returning to Kampala, the drive is slightly longer, around 8-9 hours, but it’s scenic, passing through beautiful landscapes. You can stop for lunch at the Igongo Cultural Centre, where you’ll enjoy a delicious local meal and explore the fascinating exhibits showcasing the traditions of the Ankole people. By the evening, you’ll be back in Kigali or Kampala/Entebbe, concluding your incredible 3-day gorilla trekking safari.
