Detailed itinerary For 5 Days Gorilla Trek
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Your 5 Days Gorilla Trek adventure begins with your arrival in Kigali International Air port, Rwanda’s vibrant and clean capital city, where you are warmly welcomed by your driver-guide. After a short safari briefing, you set off on a scenic journey toward Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The drive takes you through Kigali’s bustling streets and out into Rwanda’s picturesque countryside, often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Rolling hills, lush green plantations, and traditional homesteads provide a perfect introduction to the region’s beauty.
Along the way, there is an opportunity to stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial or local craft markets (time permitting), giving you a glimpse into Rwanda’s history and culture. Continuing west, you head toward the Cyanika border crossing, where your guide assists with immigration formalities before entering Uganda. From here, the scenery shifts into dramatic volcanic landscapes, with views of the Virunga Mountains towering above terraced farmlands and misty valleys.
The journey is both relaxing and inspiring, offering plenty of photo stops and cultural encounters along the road. By late afternoon or evening, you arrive at your lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The tranquil setting, surrounded by forests and volcanic peaks, is perfect for unwinding after the drive. Enjoy a hearty dinner, take in the views, and rest well as you prepare for the thrilling gorilla trekking adventure that awaits the next day.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga
After an early breakfast, our driver will drive you to Mgahinga National Park headquarters arriving in time for briefing. Before briefing, your passport details will be required to make sure that you are eligible to trek mountain gorillas. This will be followed by a briefing from one of the UWA rangers about gorilla trekking, dos and don’ts and instructions to be followed on the trek, with the gorillas, and after the trek. You will then be led to the forest to search for the mountain gorillas. Mgahinga National Park has only one habituated mountain gorilla family called Nyakagezi which used to move between Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga National Park, but it is now permanently resident in Uganda. Once you find Nyakagezi Family, you will be allowed one hour with the gorillas and then return to the Lodge for your overnight.
This is a spectacular and life time experience with Uganda ‘s gentle giants
Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking Experience
After breakfast, you will transfer to Mgahinga National Park headquarters for either a full-day golden monkey habituation experience or a half-day golden monkey trekking. You will be briefed about the dos and don’ts while with golden monkeys and then proceed to the mountain/forest for your trek. You will be allowed enough time with researchers if you choose to do the golden monkey experience and only one hour if you choose to do the golden monkey trekking. Return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 4: Lake Mutanda Canoeing excursion
After the exciting primate treks, today is all about slowing down and soaking in the tranquil beauty of Lake Mutanda. You wake up to the cool morning breeze and stunning views of the glassy lake waters, dotted with small islands and framed by the towering Virunga Volcanoes in the background. After breakfast, you head out for a canoeing experience with a local guide. As you glide across the calm waters in a traditional dugout canoe, you can spot numerous water birds such as kingfishers, herons, and cormorants.
Later, you may take a nature walk along the lake’s shores, passing through local villages, terraced farms, and banana plantations. This is a wonderful chance to interact with the friendly Bakiga and Batwa communities.
Day 5: End of 5 Days Gorilla Trek
After an early breakfast, you will check out from your lodge and begin the return journey from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to Kigali. The scenic 3–4 hour drive takes you through the rolling hills of southwestern Uganda, past terraced farmlands, local markets, and traditional homesteads. On arrival at the Cyanika or Katuna border post, you will clear with immigration before continuing into Rwanda. Depending on your flight schedule, you may enjoy a short city tour of Kigali, visiting landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, or cultural centers. Later, your driver-guide will drop you off at Kigali International Airport in time for your departure flight, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure that combined gorilla trekking, cultural encounters on the Batwa Trail, and the breathtaking scenery of Mgahinga.
