Preparations for 5 Days Mgahinga and Bunyonyi

For this safari, you need to be well-prepared both physically and practically to make the most of your adventure. Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months’ validity, a Uganda Tourist Visa or East African Visa if entering through Kigali, and your gorilla and golden monkey permits booked in advance since they are limited. Carry your yellow fever vaccination certificate, recommended vaccines like Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus, plus travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and evacuation during trekking. For clothing and gear, pack strong waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts and trousers in neutral colors, a waterproof jacket or poncho, gloves for holding onto vegetation, warm clothing for cold evenings, and a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection. A small backpack will be essential for carrying items like packed lunch, water, and personal belongings, while a walking stick (provided at the park) will help on steep terrain. For Lake Bunyonyi, bring swimwear, light clothes, and sandals for relaxation.

Health and safety should not be overlooked, so come with anti-malarial medication, insect repellent, and a personal first aid kit with prescribed medicines, painkillers, and band-aids. During primate encounters, wearing a mask is mandatory to protect gorillas and monkeys from human diseases, and you must keep a 7-meter distance. Fitness is also key; the treks can take between 2–6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas, so prepare by jogging, walking, or doing light hikes before your trip, as the trails can be steep, muddy, and physically demanding. Carry at least two liters of drinking water for trekking days, and lodges will provide packed lunches and snacks such as energy bars, fruits, and sandwiches.

When it comes to money, carry Ugandan Shillings for local purchases and small USD notes for tips, usually $10–20 for park rangers and guides, and $5–10 for lodge staff or porters. ATMs are scarce around national parks, so withdraw cash in major towns before the safari. For electronics, bring a good camera (without flash for gorilla photography), extra batteries, memory cards, binoculars for birdwatching, a universal plug adapter (Uganda uses UK-style plugs), and a power bank since some lodges have limited electricity. Internet is available at most lodges but can be slow, so plan accordingly.

Day-by-day, you should prepare as follows: on Day 1 (arrival), keep your documents and permits handy and carry snacks for the road; on Day 2 (gorilla trekking), wear your trekking gear, gloves, and carry water plus packed lunch; on Day 3 (golden monkey trekking and Batwa trail), similar gear applies though the trek is lighter; on Day 4 (Lake Bunyonyi), switch to swimwear, light clothing, and enjoy the lake and island activities; and on Day 5 (departure), ensure your travel documents and souvenirs are safely packed for your journey home. With this preparation, you will be physically, mentally, and practically ready for an unforgettable gorilla trekking, golden monkey, and Lake Bunyonyi safari experience.
