Understanding visa requirements is critical when planning your gorilla trekking journey, as visa rules can vary significantly across East Africa’s popular destinations, including Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A common question among travelers is whether visas can be obtained on arrival or must be arranged in advance. Each country has distinct visa regulations shaped by government policies, regional agreements, and traveler nationality, making it important to prepare well in advance.
Any person intending to enter Uganda should do so only for lawful purposes and in accordance with national immigration laws, guidelines, and formalities. Foreign nationals intending to work in Uganda must comply with requirements for expatriate employment.
All visa-prone nationalities must obtain Uganda visas to facilitate their entry into the country. Uganda visas may be obtained either at Uganda missions abroad or on arrival at ports of entry in the country.
Uganda Visa and Fees
Uganda offers several visa types depending on the nature of your visit. Below are the available options and corresponding costs:

Important to Note
Visas do not permit gainful or voluntary employment in Uganda.
Entry and exit must be through gazetted ports of entry/exit.
Uganda Visa-Exempt Nationalities
Some travelers are exempt from paying for Uganda visas. These include nationals from COMESA countries, East Africa, and others, as listed below:
COMESA Countries
Angola, Eritrea, Malawi, Madagascar, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia, Comoros, Zimbabwe, Botswana.
East African Community Countries
Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi.
Other Countries:
Antigua, Barbados, Fiji, Grenada, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Vanuatu, Ghana, Cyprus, Bahamas, Belize, Gambia, Jamaica, Malta, Singapore, Tonga, Ireland, Libya.
Residents of Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda can travel between these three countries without paying visa fees.

These differences reflect each country’s border control systems and the traveler’s nationality. Familiarizing yourself with the latest regulations is crucial before planning your trip.
Rwanda and Uganda offer relatively simple visa processes, including visas on arrival and online applications. The Democratic Republic of Congo, however, requires travelers to secure their visas in advance, often with support from an authorized tour operator. Additionally, regional initiatives like the East Africa Tourist Visa make it easier for visitors traveling between multiple countries.
Arriving in Rwanda
Rwanda has made its visa process highly traveler-friendly to encourage tourism. Travelers can obtain a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport and other points of entry, provided they meet eligibility requirements. The visa on arrival costs USD 50 and allows a single stay of up to 30 days.
For those who prefer to arrange everything in advance, Rwanda also offers an online eVisa system through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration. Applications are processed within 24 to 72 hours and require a passport valid for at least six months, a passport-sized photograph, and proof of onward or return travel. Carrying a printed copy of your eVisa approval is recommended for easy immigration clearance.
Additionally, travelers must meet health requirements, including presenting a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
Arriving in Uganda
Uganda offers visitors flexibility with both visa on arrival and online eVisa options. Travelers can obtain a single-entry visa at Entebbe International Airport or various land border crossings for USD 50, allowing a stay of up to 30 days.
Alternatively, visitors can apply for an eVisa through Uganda’s online portal. The process usually takes between two and four business days. Applicants must submit a scanned copy of their passport, a passport-sized photo, and proof of travel plans such as return flight tickets.
As with Rwanda, travelers must also comply with health regulations, including presenting a yellow fever vaccination certificate at the port of entry.
East Africa Tourist Visa: A Convenient Option
The East Africa Tourist Visa is an excellent option for those planning to visit multiple countries in the region. This visa allows entry into Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya for a period of 90 days and is valid for multiple entries as long as travelers remain within these three countries.
The application process is simple and can be completed online or upon arrival at the first port of entry. The visa costs USD 100 and requires a valid passport (with at least six months of validity), a recent passport photo, and proof of onward or return travel.
Important:
The East Africa Tourist Visa does not include the Democratic Republic of Congo. Those planning to visit DRC’s gorilla trekking sites, such as Virunga National Park, must apply for a separate visa through Congolese immigration or Virunga’s visa program.

If you are planning to visit multiple countries within East Africa, the East Africa Tourist Visa offers significant convenience. Instead of applying separately for Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, one visa covers all three, saving both time and money.
Engage a Trusted Tour Operator
When traveling to the DRC, it’s often mandatory to work with a licensed tour operator to secure the required invitation letter and assist with the visa application. Tour operators can streamline the process and ensure compliance with local immigration requirements.
Ensure Compliance with Health Requirements
