Detailed itinerary For 5 Days Gorilla & Volunteer
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Kisoro (Gateway to Mgahinga)
Upon arrival on your 5 Days Gorilla & Volunteer at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda or Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver/guide who will brief you about the safari and volunteering journey ahead. If starting from Entebbe, you will take a scenic drive southwest through Uganda’s lush countryside, passing rolling hills, plantations, and local markets along the way. From Kigali, the drive is shorter and equally rewarding, crossing into Uganda via the Cyanika or Katuna border, offering breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes.
A stop will be made en route for lunch and photography moments at strategic viewpoints, including the dramatic hills of southwestern Uganda or Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills.” After border formalities, continue to Kisoro town—the base for both gorilla trekking and volunteering activities. On arrival, check in at your lodge where you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink and time to relax. In the evening, your guide will give you a detailed orientation on the days ahead, including gorilla trekking preparations and the volunteering project.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the park headquarters at Ntebeko for a pre-trekking briefing conducted by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. The briefing covers gorilla trekking rules, safety guidelines, and expectations of the day. Armed with your trekking permit, packed lunch, water, and trekking gear, you will then be grouped and assigned to a specific gorilla family to track.
The trek begins as you enter the dense montane forest, guided by experienced trackers. The journey can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas, winding through bamboo zones, montane woodland, and open clearings. Along the way, you may encounter other fascinating wildlife such as golden monkeys, forest elephants, and a variety of bird species unique to the Albertine Rift. The forest atmosphere, filled with bird calls and rustling vegetation, makes the adventure even more rewarding.
Upon finding the gorilla family, you will spend one magical hour observing their behavior—watching infants play, mothers care for their young, and the dominant silverback overseeing the group. This rare encounter offers incredible opportunities for photography and a deep connection with one of the world’s most endangered species.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Batwa Trail Experience
Start your morning with an early breakfast before heading once again to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Today’s adventure begins with golden monkey trekking, another unique primate experience in the Virunga ranges. After a short briefing by the park rangers, you will set out into the bamboo forests, the preferred habitat of these playful and endangered primates. The trek is generally easier than gorilla trekking and offers you the chance to watch golden monkeys leap gracefully from tree to tree, feed on bamboo shoots, and interact in lively groups. Their bright golden-orange fur makes them one of the most photogenic primates in the region, and your hour with them promises to be as fascinating as it is memorable.
After the golden monkey experience, you will return to the trailhead and enjoy your packed lunch before embarking on the Batwa cultural trail.
Day 4: Community Volunteer Experience and Cultural Engagement
After breakfast at your lodge, you will head into the nearby local community where you will spend the day participating in volunteer activities aimed at giving back and fostering cultural exchange. Depending on the season and community needs, you may be involved in projects such as assisting at a local school with teaching or storytelling, engaging children through sports and creative games, or working alongside local women’s groups in handicraft making and sustainable farming practices. Guests with an interest in conservation may also help with environmental initiatives such as tree planting or community clean-up drives that support the protection of the gorilla habitat.
During the mid-morning, you will join a traditional cooking session, where Batwa community members will guide you through preparing local dishes such as matooke, beans, groundnut sauce, or millet bread. After enjoying the meal together, you will have time to interact with the elders, listen to folktales, and learn about cultural traditions including music, dance, and storytelling.
In the afternoon, you will continue volunteering in chosen activities—for example, painting a classroom, helping with water access projects, or supporting a village health team. This hands-on experience not only makes a meaningful impact but also allows you to immerse yourself in daily Ugandan life. As the day winds down, you will be treated to a vibrant cultural performance featuring Batwa songs, drumming, and dance—a celebration of resilience and heritage.
Later in the evening, return to your lodge for relaxation, reflection on the day’s meaningful encounters, and preparation for the next adventure.
Day 5 : Departure back to Kigali / Entebbe
As your 5 Days Gorilla & Volunteer journey comes to an end, you will carry home more than memories—you will leave with a deep sense of connection to nature, culture, and community. From standing face-to-face with the majestic mountain gorillas and playful golden monkeys, to gliding peacefully on Lake Mutanda’s shimmering waters, and finally giving back through meaningful volunteer work, this adventure offers both discovery and purpose. It is a safari that blends wildlife encounters, cultural immersion, and personal contribution, ensuring that every moment spent in Uganda leaves a lasting impression on both you and the people whose lives you’ve touched.
