The Binyindo Gorilla Family
The Binyindo Gorilla Family is one of the remarkable mountain gorilla groups living in the dense tropical forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. Found in the Buhoma sector, this family takes its name from its dominant silverback, Binyindo, who is easily recognized by his unique nasal features, thought to be shaped by scars or his natural appearance.
The group underwent a thorough three-year habituation process before being opened for tourism around 2018–2021, a critical conservation step that ensures gorillas gradually become accustomed to human presence without altering their natural behavior. As of early 2024, the Binyindo family consists of about nine members, including one silverback, five adult females, two juveniles, and one infant. Like other mountain gorilla groups, family size may fluctuate over time due to births, deaths, or dispersal.
The Binyindo family roams a scenic range near the Ivi River trail, close to the border with the Sarambwe Nature Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Treks to visit them typically start at the Buhoma trailhead with a ranger briefing, followed by a guided hike through steep, forested terrain that can take two to eight hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Once the group is found, visitors are allowed one unforgettable hour observing their behaviors from the silverback’s calm dominance to the playful antics of juveniles and the tender care of mothers with infants.
