The Binyindo Gorilla Family is one of the newest habituated groups available for gorilla trekking in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Named after its dominant silverback, Binyindo—known for his distinctive nasal features—the group was officially opened for tourism in 2018 following approximately three years of close monitoring and habituation by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and researchers.

Family  Composition

As of the latest data, the Binyindo family comprises six members:​

  • 1 Silverback (Binyindo)

  • 5 Adult females

  • 2 Sub-adult females

  • 1 Infant

This relatively small group size offers an intimate and rewarding trekking experience, allowing visitors to observe the gorillas’ social interactions and behaviors up close.​

Location and Habitat

The Binyindo group resides in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, specifically along the Ivi River trail near the border with the Sarambwe Nature Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This area is characterized by dense forests and diverse flora, providing a rich habitat for the gorillas and an immersive experience for trekkers.

Trekking Experience

Trekking to see the Binyindo family is considered moderately challenging due to the rugged terrain and dense vegetation. However, the effort is well rewarded with the opportunity to spend an hour observing these majestic creatures in their natural environment. The group’s habituation to human presence means they are generally comfortable with visitors, allowing for meaningful and respectful wildlife encounters.

Gorilla trekking permits for the Binyindo group can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or authorized tour operators. It’s advisable to book well in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot. Each trekking group is limited to eight visitors per day to minimize human impact on the gorillas and their habitat.
