Bwindi Forest Map & Sector Overview
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, sprawling across steep hills and deep valleys on the edge of the Albertine Rift. Covering approximately 331 square kilometers, this ancient rainforest is one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth.
Although often thought of as one destination, Bwindi is divided into four main sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo — each with its own unique atmosphere, trailheads, gorilla families, and lodging options.
If you look at a map of Bwindi, the park resembles an irregularly shaped triangle, with Buhoma at the northern tip, Ruhija to the northeast, Rushaga towards the southeast, and Nkuringo directly south.
Because of the rugged terrain and limited road networks, it’s important to understand that traveling between these sectors is not easy or fast — drives can take 3 to 5 hours over steep, muddy, and often rough roads.
Thus, visitors need to plan carefully to stay in the correct sector according to where their gorilla trekking permit has been issued.
Buhoma Sector (North)
Buhoma is the oldest and most established sector, often considered the gateway to Bwindi.
This is where gorilla trekking in Uganda first began in 1993 when the Mubare Gorilla Family was habituated for tourism.
Buhoma is easily accessible by road from Kampala or via Kihihi Airstrip for those flying in.
The terrain here is relatively gentler compared to the southern sectors, making it a popular choice for travelers seeking shorter, less strenuous treks.
Buhoma offers a variety of accommodation choices, from luxury lodges like Bwindi Lodge and Mahogany Springs to community-run budget options like Buhoma Community Rest Camp.
Apart from gorilla trekking, visitors here can also enjoy nature walks, community village tours, and the Batwa Cultural Experience, making Buhoma a well-rounded destination for both wildlife and cultural encounters.
Ruhija Sector (Northeast)
Situated east of Buhoma, Ruhija is considered the best sector for birdwatchers and travelers seeking a slightly quieter, off-the-beaten-path experience.
At an altitude of around 2,350 meters, Ruhija is the highest of the four sectors, offering cooler weather and stunning views across the mist-shrouded forest.
The trekking routes here can be moderately challenging, with steep ascents and descents, but they reward visitors with a high likelihood of gorilla sightings.
Ruhija is home to several habituated gorilla families, such as the Bitukura and Oruzogo groups.
It also boasts a variety of bird species, including rare Albertine Rift endemics like the African green broadbill, making it a paradise for ornithologists.
Accommodation options in Ruhija are more limited but growing, with comfortable lodges like Gorilla Mist Camp and Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge offering welcoming stays.
Rushaga Sector (Southeast)
Rushaga is located in the southeastern portion of Bwindi, close to the border with Rwanda.
This sector is the most flexible for permit availability, hosting the largest number of habituated gorilla families, which makes it easier to secure a trekking permit even during peak seasons.
Rushaga is also the only sector currently offering the special Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors can spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group, observing and participating in the gradual process of making them accustomed to human presence.
Treks in Rushaga can be demanding, involving steep trails through thick jungle, but the reward is intimate encounters with multiple gorilla groups such as the Mishaya, Nshongi, and Busingye families.
Rushaga’s accommodation offerings range from midrange to high-end, with excellent options like Four Gorillas Lodge and Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge providing easy access to the trailheads.
Nkuringo Sector (South)
Perched on a high ridge overlooking the dramatic Virunga Volcanoes, Nkuringo is often described as the most scenic — and the most physically challenging — sector of Bwindi.
Treks here involve steep climbs and descents, often at high altitudes, making it suitable for fit and adventurous travelers.
However, the spectacular forest vistas, rolling hills, and clear skies over the volcanoes offer breathtaking rewards that few places can match.
Nkuringo is home to the Nkuringo and Christmas gorilla families, and trekking here tends to feel more remote and intimate, with fewer crowds.
The sector has excellent high-end lodges like Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, offering luxurious stays with panoramic views, as well as cozy midrange options like Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge.
In addition to gorilla trekking, Nkuringo offers beautiful walking safaris and cultural experiences connecting visitors with local communities and Batwa heritage.

For bird enthusiasts and quieter trails, Ruhija is ideal.
If flexibility in permits or the unique chance for the Gorilla Habituation Experience is your goal, Rushaga should be your pick.
For those craving breathtaking scenery and a tougher challenge, Nkuringo promises a truly rewarding adventure.
It’s critical to book your accommodation and gorilla permits aligned with the same sector to avoid long, complicated transfers on the morning of your trek.
Many travelers even combine two sectors to experience different aspects of Bwindi during a longer stay.
