The Christmas Gorilla Family is one of the fascinating groups living in the Nkuringo Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, southwestern Uganda. Named after its dominant silverback Christmas, who was born around Christmas time, this group is relatively new to gorilla tourism, having officially opened for trekking in 2018. Despite its newer status, the family has quickly gained popularity for its unique history and thrilling treks through the rugged Nkuringo terrain.
The group currently ranges in size from 9 to 12 individuals, depending on seasonal dynamics such as births, dispersals, and shifting sub-groups. The Christmas family is fully habituated, meaning they are accustomed to the presence of human visitors, making them ideal for close-up trekking encounters in Uganda’s thick montane forests.
History and Formation
The Christmas family originated from the famous Nkuringo Gorilla Family, which was one of the pioneering groups in the Nkuringo Sector. The dominant silverback Christmas, who was once a member of the Nkuringo group, split off to form his own family around 2015–2016. This fission occurred after internal competition and natural social dynamics, which is common among mountain gorillas.
The group was officially opened for gorilla tourism in 2018, after a thorough habituation process led by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) trackers and conservationists. It was at this point that the family was granted its own daily tracking permits, increasing tourism opportunities in the Nkuringo Sector.

Despite his calm demeanor, Christmas is highly protective of his family, often positioning himself between his group and potential threats, including unfamiliar gorillas or human presence he finds suspicious.
Habitat and Trekking Experience
The Christmas group inhabits the high-altitude, densely forested ridges of Nkuringo Sector, which lies on the southern edge of Bwindi. Treks to visit this family are often challenging, involving steep hikes and rugged terrain. However, those who take on the adventure are rewarded with unforgettable encounters in some of the most scenic landscapes of the park.
This group is particularly recommended for moderately fit to highly fit trekkers, as the trails can be steep and sometimes muddy, especially during the rainy seasons. The lush montane vegetation and panoramic views over the Virunga volcanoes make the trek rewarding beyond the gorilla experience itself.
