Kahungye Gorilla Family stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of mountain gorillas. Named after the Kahungye Hill in the Rushaga sector, where they were first sighted, this family has navigated the complexities of gorilla social dynamics, experiencing growth, leadership changes, and splits, all while captivating the hearts of those fortunate enough to encounter them.
The journey of the Kahungye family into the realm of human observation began in 2008, with their habituation process culminating in 2011 when they were officially opened for tourism. At that time, the group boasted a robust 27 members, including three formidable silverbacks: Riziika, Busingye, and Rwigi. However, the presence of multiple dominant males led to internal rivalries, a common occurrence in gorilla societies. These tensions eventually resulted in a significant split in March 2012, when Silverback Busingye branched off to form the now well-known Busingye Gorilla Family.
From Ruhemuka to Kasigazi
Initially led by Silverback Ruhemuka, the Kahungye family faced a tragic turn of events in March 2013 when Ruhemuka died from a fall, sustaining fatal injuries. This unexpected loss ushered in a new era of leadership under Silverback Kasigazi, whose name translates to “he who is strong” in the local Rukiga language. Kasigazi’s leadership has been marked by stability and growth, guiding the family through the challenges of the dense forest and ensuring their continued cohesion.
In a heartwarming development, the Kahungye family welcomed a new member on July 18, 2024. The birth was to Mukidebe, an esteemed adult female in the group, and was celebrated as a significant milestone in the ongoing conservation efforts within Bwindi. This addition brought the family’s count to 16 members, reinforcing the positive trajectory of their population and the success of protective measures in place.
