Katwe Gorilla Family
The Katwe Gorilla Family is one of the newest additions to the gorilla trekking experience in Uganda, located in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This group became open for tourism in 2018 after a successful period of habituation, which took about three years. Katwe’s formation followed the tragic death of the Mubare group’s Silverback Kanyonyi in November 2017, which led to the disbandment of some Mubare members, including adult females such as Kashundwe and Malaika, who eventually joined the new Katwe group.
The name “Katwe” is derived from the hilltop locality where the group’s initial habituation took place. Currently, the group is led by Silverback Mahaane and consists of 8 individuals: 2 silverbacks, 3 adult females, 1 blackback, and 2 infants. The family’s dynamic is still evolving, with continued monitoring of their interactions as they settle into their new family structure. Katwe’s establishment has made Buhoma a more diverse home for gorilla trekking, with a total of 4 trekking families available to visitors.
Katwe Gorilla Family is open to a limited number of trekkers, with only 8 visitors allowed per day to ensure a safe and respectful encounter with the gorillas. Visitors can purchase gorilla permits through Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), with permits costing $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and Shs 300,000 for East African citizens. It is advisable to book these permits at least 2-6 months in advance.
The Buhoma sector is easily accessible via a scenic 8-9 hour drive from Kampala or Entebbe to Kabale, followed by a short transfer to Buhoma. Alternatively, travelers can fly to the Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips and transfer to the park. For a comfortable stay, visitors can choose from various accommodation options, ranging from budget to luxury, including Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs Lodge, and more.
