The Muyambi Gorilla Family is one of the newest and most intimate gorilla groups available for trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the Buhoma sector of southwestern Uganda. Established in 2019, this group was formed when Silverback Muyambi, a former member of the Mubare family—the oldest habituated gorilla group in Uganda—broke away to establish his own troop. He was accompanied by four adult females, bringing the initial group size to five individuals.
As of the latest updates, the Muyambi group comprises seven members: one silverback (Muyambi), four adult females, and two infants. The group’s small size offers a unique and personal experience for trekkers, allowing for more intimate observations of gorilla behavior and social dynamics.
The name “Muyambi” is derived from the dominant silverback’s name, which in the local language means “helper” or “assistant.” This name reflects his role in leading and protecting the group.
