The Oruzogo Gorilla Family is one of the most charismatic and entertaining groups found in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Officially opened for tourism in 2011, this family quickly gained popularity for its large number of members, energetic juveniles, and notably playful behavior—making it a favorite among trekkers.
Oruzogo is led by the dominant silverback Tibirikwata, a powerful and respected leader who maintains peace and cohesion within the group. Alongside him is Kaganga, another silverback whose name translates to “the giant one,” reflective of his impressive stature. The family is also home to well-known individuals like Bwoba and Busungu, who are often observed engaging in spirited play and interaction with other members.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Oruzogo group is its remarkable growth over the years. In the same year it was opened to tourism, two adult females—Musi and Nta Murungi—welcomed newborns into the group, a joyful milestone for the family. Even more impressively, Kakobe, another adult female, gave birth to twins, a rare and delightful event in the world of mountain gorillas.
The group now comprises 22 members, including silverbacks, adult females, sub-adults, juveniles, and infants. Other notable gorillas include Otaka, Nyakiina, Katooto, Karimi, Kiromba, Kashundwe, and the youngest member, Buchura.
The Oruzogo family is known for its boldness, with members showing little hesitation in the presence of human observers—often moving about confidently and curiously during encounters. Watching the infants tumble, climb, and play under the watchful eyes of their mothers and elders offers a heartwarming and unforgettable experience for any visitor.
Trekkers heading out to see the Oruzogo family gather for an early morning briefing led by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. After being assigned to the Oruzogo group, they begin their journey into the dense forest—a trek that’s both exhilarating and richly rewarding.
While visitors can find suitable accommodation closer to the Ruhija sector, many also choose to stay in the nearby Buhoma sector and drive approximately two hours to the Ruhija trailhead for their tracking experience.
