The Posho Gorilla Family is one of the recently habituated gorilla groups located in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Positioned in the southern part of Bwindi, the Nkuringo sector is famed for its rugged beauty, panoramic views, and the thrill of tracking some of the park’s more challenging but rewarding gorilla families.
Family Composition and Leadership
As of the most recent updates, the Posho Gorilla Family is composed of around 12 to 13 members, including 1 silverback who currently leads the group. The family also includes multiple adult females, juveniles, and infants, reflecting a healthy and growing family unit.
The family is named after its dominant silverback, Posho, whose leadership is marked by calmness, strength, and remarkable protective instincts. Silverback Posho is known for maintaining harmony within the group while safeguarding it from external threats, including rival males or predatory animals within the dense forest ecosystem.
Habituation and Tourism
The Posho Family underwent the habituation process under the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) as part of efforts to increase the number of gorilla groups available for tourism in the Nkuringo sector. Habituation started around the late 2010s, and the family was officially opened for gorilla trekking experiences around 2022.
Their habituation was part of a broader conservation and community program aimed at protecting gorillas while supporting sustainable tourism, which brings direct benefits to surrounding local communities.
Range and Behavior
The Posho Family ranges mainly within the lush rainforests around the Kashasha and Nteko ridges of the Nkuringo sector. Unlike the more crop-raiding Nkuringo group that historically foraged outside the park, the Posho Family tends to keep deep inside Bwindi’s dense forest canopy, which minimizes human-wildlife conflicts.
Visitors who have tracked this family note that they are a relatively calm and photogenic group, often spotted resting, grooming, or foraging on wild fruits, bamboo shoots, and leaves. The infants and juveniles provide lively entertainment as they tumble and play under the watchful eyes of their mothers and the dominant silverback.
Conservation Significance
The habituation and opening of the Posho Family for trekking not only diversify gorilla tracking options in the Nkuringo sector but also help disperse tourism pressure across multiple groups, reducing stress on any single family. Furthermore, the revenue generated helps fund anti-poaching patrols, forest conservation, and community development projects around Bwindi.
Trekking the Posho Family
Tracking the Posho Family is considered moderately challenging due to the hilly terrain of Nkuringo, but it rewards trekkers with intimate and inspiring encounters. The Nkuringo sector’s elevation and dramatic views make the trek especially memorable, particularly for adventure enthusiasts who enjoy more strenuous hikes.
As with other gorilla groups in Bwindi, only 8 permits per day are issued for trekking the Posho Family, aligning with strict conservation guidelines to minimize human impact and safeguard the gorillas’ health.
